Convert Bank Statements to CSV

Extract the transactions from PDF bank statements into a CSV file. Choose a general CSV with every column, or the exact layout QuickBooks Online, Xero or Wave expects for a bank upload.

Drop a PDF bank statement here

Bank, credit union or credit card statements. Excel and OFX files work too.

Processed in your browser. Your files never leave your computer.

Pro and Business: drop several statements at once to convert them in one go.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop the PDF statement

From your bank, credit union or card issuer. Several pages and wrapped descriptions are handled.

  2. 2

    Review

The balance check confirms nothing is missing. Correct any flagged row before export.

  3. 3

    Pick a CSV layout

All columns for spreadsheets and scripts, or a ready-to-import layout for your accounting software.

The CSV layouts

LayoutColumnsUse it for

QuickBooks, 4 columnsDate, Description, Credit, DebitQuickBooks Online bank upload
XeroDate, Amount, Payee, Description, Reference, Check NumberXero statement import
WaveDate, Description, AmountWave bank statement upload

All layouts use US dates (MM/DD/YYYY) and plain amounts without dollar signs or thousands separators, which every importer reads the same way.

Uploading the CSV to QuickBooks Online

  1. Go to Transactions > Bank transactions and choose Link account > Upload from file.
  2. Select the CSV and the account.
  3. Map the columns: Date, Description, and either Amount (3 columns) or Credit and Debit (4 columns). Choose the MM/dd/yyyy date format.
  4. Review and accept the transactions.

If you'd rather skip the mapping, download a QBO file from the same screen instead. QuickBooks reads it without any column questions.

Uploading to Xero or Wave

In Xero, open the bank account and choose Manage Account > Import a Statement, then confirm the column assignments. In Wave, use Transactions > More > Upload a bank statement. Both accept the layouts above as is.

Several statements?

Convert them one at a time, or, on Pro and Business, drop them together to get one CSV per statement or a single combined CSV. To combine CSVs you already have, use Merge CSV files.

Frequently asked questions

Which CSV layout should I choose?

CSV, all columns for spreadsheets, databases or your own scripts. QuickBooks CSV (3 or 4 columns) for a QuickBooks Online bank upload. Xero CSV and Wave CSV match those programs' statement import templates.

What does the all-columns CSV contain?

Date (MM/DD/YYYY), Description, Memo, Amount (negative for money out), Balance, Check Number and a Transaction ID that stays the same if you convert the statement again, handy for de-duplicating in a database.

Are formulas a risk when I open the CSV?

Descriptions that begin with characters a spreadsheet treats as a formula (such as =, + or @) are prefixed with an apostrophe, so opening the file can't run anything.

What's the difference between the 3-column and 4-column QuickBooks CSV?

The 3-column file has one signed Amount. The 4-column file has separate Credit and Debit columns with positive numbers. QuickBooks Online accepts both; use whichever you're used to mapping.

Is there a size limit?

QuickBooks Online accepts bank uploads up to 350 KB. QuickBooks CSVs larger than that are split by date range automatically and delivered in a ZIP. Other layouts are kept in one file.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The statement is read and the CSV written in your browser.
